Cable Abatement Services

Most structured cabling contractors spend a great deal of time discussing what they will install for their clients and rightfully so. However, the issue of abandoned cable removal is often unduly overlooked. Since the release of the 2002 version of the National Electrical Code removal of abandoned cabling has been a code requirement. This is generally only enforced during a remodel / renovation project in which building permits are filed and ceilings are inspected.

This can be a downright scary proposition for the IT manager; especially when two or three generations of legacy cabling remain in place, most of which was installed before this person assumed responsibility for network infrastructure. The biggest fear is that of cutting cables that may actually still be in use; especially if the manager isn't sure what is and is not live. This is a legitimate concern.

Another concern is the cost.

Many managers would ask, "why would I pay the additional labor to have something removed that isn't hurting anything?" Or is it? Consider this:

  • Precious space will be freed up; particularly in telecommunications closets, spaces, and ducts. Have you ever had a problem trying to install new equipment or cabling but didn't have the wall or rack space because of abandoned cable fields that you were afraid to remove?
  • Combustible materials will be lessened in the ceiling creating a safer exit for your employees in the event of a fire. Many people think that the abandoned cabling isn't hurting anything because it may (or may not) be plenum rated. A plenum rating means that the cable jackets and insulation exhibit acceptable levels of burn, not that they will not burn at all.
  • Wreckout of abandoned cables provides an excellent opportunity to assess firestopping status, an even larger life safety issue.

Echo 24 technicians are skilled at identifying abandoned cables and cutting circuits away from legacy cabling to new cabling so that the legacy cables may be removed.

Echo 24 will take wrecked cables to the nearest recycling center adding added peace of mind that you are doing your part to conserve natural resources and help preserve our environment. Abandoned cable removal must be a key element of any cabling design and installation. Without it, your project may not be complete.
