Most structured cabling contractors spend a great deal of time discussing what they will install for their clients and rightfully so. This is generally only enforced during a remodel / renovation project in which building permits are filed and ceilings are inspected.

This can be a downright scary proposition for the IT manager; especially when two or three generations of legacy cabling remain in place, most of which was installed before this person assumed responsibility for network infrastructure. The biggest fear is that of cutting cables that may actually still be in use; especially if the manager isn't sure what is and is not live. This is a legitimate concern.

Many people think that the abandoned cabling isn't hurting anything because it may (or may not) be plenum rated. A plenum rating means that the cable jackets and insulation exhibit acceptable levels of burn, not that they will not burn at all.
